Please, be extremely careful with your Private Keys. Consider them to be a digital stamp with your signature on it. Unlike a physical stamp with your signature on it, if someone “steals” a copy of it, you cannot see that it is missing. On the plus side, you can cancel that “signature” and quickly obtain a new one.
When you retire an old computer, please use secure erase or an equivalent method to ensure no passwords, patient data, or certificates remain on the HDD.
If your HDD is dead, and you cannot use a secure erase program, please ensure it is physically destroyed. I can read data off your “dead” HDD more often than not, and I am far from being alone in that ability. There are businesses built around data recovery from deceased drives.
